Caption/subtitle hell in premiere 2022

I think this is fixed in Premiere 2023, but I work in premiere 2022 because in 2023 I can’t use the sub mix in the audio track mixer. (it mutes the audio)

This bug reminded me to always make sure to have a billion auto-saves. Version your project files and sequences in the prproj frequently. Unfortunately bugs and crashes happen – best to be prepared.

Here is what happened:
1. I used “Transcribe sequence” in the text window. and then started adjusting the captions, rewriting and re-timing.
2. At some point I did an extract edit shortening the sequence also cutting part of an upcoming caption on the Subtitle track.
3. From that point on the sequence did not play after the edit, I could still save the project!
after a minute or so Premiere was completely frozen.
4. After restart Premiere app the prproj was fine up to the same point in the sequence. If I moved past the point where I made the edit it froze again. older versions of the same sequence in the project where fine.
5. The solution is to first move the subtitle out of the way, then cut. see below.

Adobe Premiere Workaround: De-noising

The Adaptive Noise Reduction on a track in Premiere works well, but it has one problem, It has to get “used” to a sound before it kicks in, resulting in a pumping effect at the beginning of each cut.

To work around this follow a few easy steps:
1. find a piece of just background noise in between the words in the waveforms.
Copy & paste it for at least 5 sec in front of the audio you want to use.

Copy & paste it for at least 5 sec in front of the audio you want to use.

select the clip and extension, nest then render and replace. Or (more stable) export and cut back in. Add a dissolve to ease into the noise before that audio.

Rescan audio plugins to fix Izotope plugins disappearance from Premiere.

I open up my Premiere project on the same computer, same project, same drives attached.
This error pops up. “Audio Filter missing: RX 10 Spectral De-noise” The plugin I was using in the timeline. Hellow Adobe, It worked yesterday, I don’t have automatic updates turned on for my Mac or Creative cloud. In the iZotope Portal it says all plugins are installed & licensed. What’s going on?

The solution is simple, go into preferences>Audio and click scan to re-scan the installed audio plugins.

By the way Adobe your integration of 3rd party plugins is very very slow. I had a sequence with one Izotope de-noiser applied to a track in the timeline and then had 4 versions of that same timeline in the project. Every time I opened that prproj it took longer and longer to open the project, because it seemed to me that Premiere was reading each timeline with that plugin when it opened the project. Boo Adobe!

Glitchy, Unstable and Unreliable, can’t render or export with Premiere 2015.3

UPDATE AUG 3 2016, THE FIX IS IN, BE CAREFUL FOLKS, TEST YOUR WORKFLOWS BEFORE YOU COMMIT!

Fall 2016. They did it again, that company that I pay $53.49 every month.

A few weeks ago, before starting a big project (the online of a 3 hour PBS documentary), I upgraded to 2015.3 on my 2 Macbook Pro laptops that I use to edit. I took the option to remove the old version, more about that later.

My project specs are:

3x 53 minute reels with mixed formats ranging from 29.97 XD-CAM to DVCPRO to DV to PAL 25 fps footage on a ProRes-422 Timeline with Previews set to ProRes-422. 1920×1080 interlaced.

All was good the 2 weeks before the job came in on short tests. I liked the proxy workflow, liked the connection to my Tangent panels. etc. etc.

Then the job came in and it all quickly fell apart…

-It didn’t work or was super glitchy and unstable with my Red Giant shooter suite and Universe plug ins, even though Red Giant announced they were 2015.3 ready.

the Lumetri effect was unstable, randomly changed sliders I didn’t touch and, most important, I couldn’t save my presets reliably.

-After each crash there were different inconsistencies with all the edit decisions I made. I kept second guessing myself about stuff I fixed or fx that I did.

-The biggest issue was that after working for 5 days getting this project into premiere from FCP7, I couldn’t render or export!

PR-error-compiling

The stupid new error message that tells me where the render stopped is very unhelpful. Because there is NOTHING I can do to ever render successfully!

I re-installed the old version 2015.2 and re-did the work I did unpaid:

-Of course you can’t open a newer project in the old version.

-I used the video XML’s from FCP 7 to rebuild the timelines.

Using XML out of 2015.3 for video with FX was glitchy and unreliable, created more crashes.

-Luckily I hadn’t worked on audio much so I made audio-only sequences and the “cut’s only” XML out of 2015.3 to 2015.2 worked fine.

PR-open-with

-The good news was that having both 2015.2 & 2015.3 open at the same time using the same video output device (in my case a Ultra studio mini monitor) didn’t create any conflicts or crashes!

unpaid

Dear Adobe, my clients don’t care what software I use to get the job done. If you rush out versions and then force me to stay up all night, unpaid to fix the project, you’re not keeping me as a friend!  I’ve been using Photoshop for 20 plus years and Premiere as my main editing software for almost 3. This is the second time you rolled out a glitchy, buggy version for us beta testers. Please give us a break. I don’t care about any new bells and whistles if you keep breaking your basic functions.

This story has a happy ending, because I’ve been working on a stable system for the past 4 days and just did an export of my fully rendered 53 min timeline, using previews, in 2 minutes! That’s 1/25th realtime!

To me that proves that when software is matched with correct hardware, operating system and project specs, Adobe software can do miracles. Adobe should write more honest workflows like this and focus on keeping out bugs when it rolls out a new release.

Of course my experience is based on a specific machine, but I also work on many PC systems and usually experience the same glitches.

Warp Stabilizer & project size hell with Premiere 2015.2

I’ve been in warp/project size hell for the past 3 days, working 15 hour days, trying to deliver this 2 hour show on a deadline.

The show needed a lot of stabilizing so I started using the Warp Stabilizer until I realized that the project was becoming unstable north of 100MB. When the project grew to 138MB. Auto saves started to take more than a minute and stabilizes, already analyzed and rendered turned into black for the duration of the shot or a freeze frame of the previous shot.

It was not the hardware (HP-Z840, 32G RAM, Quadro K5000, fast internal SSD raid) or choice of sequence format (Quicktime DNxHD-SQ). It was Adobe hating me again, taking my money but not delivering software that actually works. A search on the internet for any of these symptoms is unhelpful and even shows annoying posts from Adobe saying big projects don’t matter. They know they have to fix it and come up with an Avid style system where projects are saved into separate bins that are actually self contained files. To add insult to injury they just announced Avid style collaboration workflows but I’m sure still not radically rewriting their code to break up the project into separate files.

Thank you Adobe for giving me the opportunity to work late at night, unpaid, in empty offices where everybody else has gone for the weekend.  The project got done, and exported after I discovered that there is a saturation point after about 100 warp stabilizes. At that point the sequence and the project are retaining so much useless tracking information that things start to go bad creating those black or freeze frame shots. Removing the stabilizes and either doing without or linking to AE and doing them there is the solution. Adobe please tell one of your 14,156 programmers to:

1. After a warp stabilize is analyzed  and applied, delete the tracking points. (this is what Avid does)

2. Rewrite the code to break a growing Premiere project up into smaller chunks to improve performance.

What does Adobe do with my money?

I give them $600 a year and in 2016 they said they had 9 million creative cloud users. Let’s say by now they have ten.

From the money we give them they can hire 14,156 programmers. How is it possible that their 2017 software is so glitchy, unstable and unreliable?

Did most of the original programmers leave and the ones that work there now are afraid to touch it and make too many changes?

Why are they wasting their time on shit like VoCO?

Whatever the reasons are, we users are duped and wasting our lives away after hours, unpaid trying to get our shows done.

I’ve been editing for over 20 years and after switching to premiere 3 years ago, I’m now working a lot in Avid again.

Avid’s interface is still stuck in the past but:

-Renders always stay rendered.

-Exports never fail.

-Audio never drops out or goes out of sync.

-Collaborating using Bins with a red lock / green lock works great. -Multi cam works flawless, good playback even with 12 cameras. -Avid is actually cheaper now and works on the same hardware. Fix your shit Adobe or we will take our 6 billion somewhere else!

The funny thing is that the dreaded subscription model that they introduced was adopted by the competition. Production company’s are choosing an NLE based on the needs of the production, not on what software package happens to be installed in their facilities. You can pay month to month so its easy to work 3 months in Avid, then switch for a few months to Premiere, then switch some systems over to Resolve. etc. etc.

The big 3: Avid, Premiere, Resolve, can co-exist on the same machine with same specs and hardware.
