As of early 2026, Adobe Premiere Pro still doesn’t support real-time down conversion from a 4K editing timeline to an HD external monitor (2026 or earlier version) using an interface like the BM Ultra Studio. Only way in Premiere is to screen 4K on your computer monitor.
If you know for sure your deliverable is HD 1920×1080, work on an HD timeline with the 4k scaled to 50%.
But that can really cost you if you edited a show for broadcast and then be asked to make a 4k DCP for theatrical. You’ll have to go back to the 4K frame rate (most likely 23.98 not 29.97) and redo all the resizing done on the HD timeline. Hopefully your GFX size up and position correct!
On the web people are saying “Just set unsupported frame size to scale down” Blackmagic’s hardware and drivers can output whatever Premiere requests, but Premiere only sends a single output feed. So if your sequence is set to 4K, it outputs 4K and if the driver setting says “Scale down” it goes to 2048×1080 most broadcast monitors can’t display.

In Avid this is no problem because you can set any resolution in the Video Output Settings. Even with a 4K timeline.

Same in Resolve where monitor settings are independent from timeline resolution.
In all cases use proxies if performance is an issue.
